After so many years in the high desert News of springs drying up Dwells just below my ribs Just above my belly An ambulatory question without time Or words But it may ask something very roughly like "Okay, now what?" Is it the mouth of a cave down there Where it is still moist and green? Are there salamanders And ferns--, stones covered in Moss and lichen? Is this slow, cool breath the breath of limestone? Is this mobile question a vial of tears? Is this the fore-shock of a sob, a cascade of sobbing? You have recommended prayer But -- at first -- I didn't know how flat and dry My notion of prayer was And now? Prayer is up and walking Of course, it has no idea where it is going It laughs a little at the idea of Getting on its knees

Dougald Hine recommended prayer in response to my expressed difficulties of late. I told him I was a non-theist, but I must admit I was in need of something like non-theist prayer. He recommended I listen to this podcast episode. It's rather brilliant, really.:http://www.homewardbound.org/the-great-humbling-s3e7-get-on-your-knees/
Thank you, James! How sweet to find this nestling in my inbox on returning from a prolonged digital sabbath.
